Went to the plex to see "About Schmidt". A perfect film. And one so amazingly on target about how kitsch America is, without ever veering into parody. The many ways in which Schmidt/Nicholson wakes up in the morning were simply fabulous...his daughter, her fiancé, the the fiancé's earth mother, the church....all simply right on the mark. Ironic and straightforward at the same time. Did you shed a tear at the end with Schmidt?

The Right Way
Scientific research shows that the great majority of humans turn their head to the right before they kiss. Read about it in Nature.
Today's human (From Rodrigo's Blog)
I try to show my family, friends and students that today's human can develop techniques that allow him the illusion of complete dominion over his professional environment, but is far from mastering himself: from being his own teacher, responsible for himself, his own spirit, multiplying. And that is because the schools and educational system are only concerned with developing the mind and body, and completely ignore the Spirit, the Soul, the Inward.

On the town
Last night I drove down by myself to hear some jazz at Ortlieb's in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia. When I got there (9:30) the band was just about to start and I was pleased to see that guitarist Randy Johnston was leading (I had heard his Muse CD that I bought for the Princeton library when i used to work there). He is an excellent player with lots of chops and imagination - the best kind of straightahead jazz. I asked for a bossa when they took a break, and they began the second set with Amor em paz (known in English as "Once I loved").
Ortlieb's is a nice place, usually quiet, but last night it was simply packed with noisy twenty-somethings who talked throughout the music. Arrgh.

e cercou o local. Quatro soldados usaram um enforcador para imobilizá-la. A
Quartel do Humaitá.

Aerial Sheep Head Breaks Concertgoer's Skull
Associated Press Thursday, March 13, 2003
OSLO, Norway -- A flying sheep's head hit a concertgoer and fractured his skull at a concert of metal band Mayhem.
The band, part of Norway's death metal music scene, was carving up a dead sheep as part of its stage act when the animal's head flew off lead singer Maniac's knife and struck Per Kristian Hagen, 25.
The show was in Bergen, 487 kilometers (302 miles) west of the capital, Oslo.
"My relationship to sheep is a bit ambivalent now. I like them, but not when they come flying through the air," Hagen told The Associated Press from his hospital room. "I have a headache now." He is expected to recover.
Hagen, a Mayhem fan, filed involuntary assault and battery charges against the band. The charges carry a maximum sentence of six months in prison.
Mayhem member Rune Eriksen, whose stage name is Blasphemer, said the incident was unfortunate.
"The whole thing was an accident, but maybe it would be an idea for another show," he said.
Eriksen promised Hagen a free ticket to the group's next performance.
Police detective Carl-Petter Leganger told the AP an investigation has started, but "nothing suggests this was a conscious act."

The review of our Saturday concert is in the newspaper this AM.
"Although the theater music was charming and historically interesting, the highlight of the evening was Handel's Sonata for Flute and Continuo, op. 1, no. 5 in G major, with Moore taking the lead. This delightful suite of contrasting movements showed off the meticulous playing of this ensemble, especially Moore and Fournier. In the second Adagio, Fournier leads with a descending figure, delicately echoed by the flute. This is Triomphe de l'Amour at its best."

Love in the Guise of Friendship
by Robert Burns
Talk not of love, it gives me pain,
For love has been my foe;
He bound me in an iron chain,
And plung'd me deep in woe.
But friendship's pure and lasting joys,
My heart was form'd to prove;
There, welcome win and wear the prize,
But never talk of love.
Your friendship much can make me blest,
O why that bliss destroy?
Why urge the only, one request
You know I will deny?
Your thought, if Love must harbour there,
Conceal it in that thought;
Nor cause it in that thought;
Nor cause me from my bosom tear
The very friend I sought.
A Temple to Friendship
"A temple to Friendship," cried Laura, enchanted,
"I'll build in this garden; the thought is divine.:
So the temple was built, and she now only wanted
An image of Friendship, to place on the shrine.
So she flew to the sculptor, who sat down before her
An image, the fairest his art could invent;
But so cold, and so dull, that the youthful adorer
Saw plainly this was not the Friendship she meant.
"O, never," said she, "could I think of enshrining
An image whose looks are so joyless and dim;
But yon little god upon roses reclining,
We'll make, if you please, sir, a Friendship of him."
So the bargain was struck; with the little god laden,
She joyfully flew to her home in the grove.
"Farewell," said the sculptor, "you're not the first maiden
Who came but for Friendship, and took away Love!"
--Thomas Moore (1770-1852)

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW CLASSICAL MUSIC?
Check it out. Here!
Quantas noites não durmo,
A rolar-me na cama
A sentir tantas coisas
Não me aquece direito
A great Italian politician, who further was very learned in oriental languages, a very rare thing among our politicians, said to me in my youth : "Caro figlio, remember that the Jews have never had but one good institution, that of having a horror of virginity." If this little race of superstitious intermediaries had not considered marriage as the first law of man, if there had been among them convents of nuns, they were irreparably lost.

Minha vida americana
Oi, galera. Things have been busyish here recently. Triomphe de l'amour had a nice concert last night, featuring our soprano Laura Heimes who will be singing in São Paulo in August, we hope.
She sang a nice selection of vocal numbers from English musical plays of the eighteenth century, including some really virtuosic pieces in the classical style. She knocked em dead.
There was also a fiery violin sonata by Giardini, a trio sonata for violins by Handel, and I played suave Handel flute sonata. We had a nice turnout.
Today I taught bible study at the Quaker meeting (two students...) and then hightailed it down to Delaware to rehearse for next weeks concerts with Melomanie. Telemann, Clerambault, Hagerty, and Sergio's new suite for harpsichord. I am tired....

Mall Wants to Drop Peace T-Shirt Charges
Mall Asks Police to Drop Trespassing Charges Against N.Y. Man Arrested Over Anti-War T-Shirt
The Associated Press
Officials at a mall where a man was arrested for refusing to remove an anti-war T-shirt asked Wednesday that trespassing charges against him be dropped.
Police said managers from Crossgates Mall called and asked that the complaint against Stephen Downs be withdrawn. Police Chief James Murley said he would support the mall's decision.
Earlier Wednesday, about 100 anti-war demonstrators marched through the mall to protest the arrest. They told a mall manager they would stop only when charges against the shopper were dropped and when the mall outlined its policy.
"We just want to know what the policy is and why it's being randomly enforced," said Erin O'Brien, an organizer of the noontime rally. "It's only the people in the recent months who have anti-war or peace T-shirts that are being asked to leave the mall."
A mall spokeswoman did not return repeated calls for comment.
Downs' son, Roger, said dropping the charge would not rectify the arrest. "My father feels there's more to this. Crossgates hasn't examined what was wrong here," he said. "I think he'd like an apology."
He said his father would wait to see how the mall handles the case before deciding whether to sue.
Stephen Downs, 61, and his son were stopped Monday by mall security guards and asked to remove their shirts that read "Peace on Earth" and "Give Peace a Chance," or leave. Roger Downs, 31, took off his shirt. But his father, a lawyer with the state Commission on Judicial Conduct and a former Peace Corps volunteer, refused.
The guards called police, and he was charged with trespassing and pleaded innocent.
Tim Kelley, director of Operations for Pyramid Mall management, the mall's owner, said in a statement that Downs' behavior and clothing was disruptive to other shoppers.
The men had had the T-shirts made at a mall store and wore them while they shopped.

Global Women Writers
Today, at the reference desk, a student approached for help with a research project. He needed to find women writers of children's books from non-first world- countries (actually he said "non-western"....). So first I thought of Ruth Rocha...but the only book we have of hers is the childrens' version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But then a light went on..and I gave him my translations of Cora's and Nora's childrens' stories. He said "I want a Dib-Dab!!!"...and promised to send me a copy of his paper to read. Perhaps I can post it here....
